Abstract

1,242,336. Coloured glass. OWENSILLINOIS Inc. 13 Jan., 1969 [11 Jan., 1968], No. 1871/69. Heading C1M. A "black amber" glass is formed by adding to a sulphide-containing amber base glass (either to the melt or to the batch) sufficient copper oxide whereby the copper oxide reacts with the sulphide to form a black chromophore. In a a modification of the process a reduced amber base glass is used, the glass containing sulphide and copper oxide being maintained (e.g. for about 20 minutes) at or near the opal point so as to allow development of microcrystalline particles on cooling, shaped, annealed and cooled, so as to form an opalescent chocolate brown amber glass. A suitable amber glass comprises (in weight per cent): SiO 2 69À9-72À2 Al 2 O 3 1-4 Na 2 O and/or K 2 O 12-15À5 CaO and/or MgO 10-13, to which may be added 0À05-0À5 weight per cent Fe 2 O 3 . 0-5% BaO and 0-3% Li 2 O may also be present. Copper oxide is preferably added in an amount of 0À03-0À1% by weight, and the sulphur in the product glass is preferably 0À02-0À08% by weight.
