Abstract

1,242,102. Anion-modified overbased carbonated organic complexes. LUBRIZOL CORP. 17 Sept., 1968, No. 44186/68. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Divisions C2 and C5] Overbased carbonated organic compounds (a), which may be amine-aldehyde or addition polymers, containing a metal of Groups I or II of the Periodic Table, are modified by contacting them with (b) an inorganic acid or an ammonium, amine or metal salt thereof, or a gas forming in water an acid stronger than carbonic acid, in the presence of (c) a peptizing agent which is a substance other than an overbased carbonated organic complex of a Group I or II metal, effective as a dispersing agent in a lubricating oil. The overbased compounds are those used as lubricant additives and are prepared by reaction of an organic compound, of which many suitable are listed, with a stoichiometric excess of a basic Group I or II metal compound, preferably in the presence of a phenolic promoter in an inert organic solvent, followed by treatment with CO 2 -a number of such preparations are described. The equivalent ratio of (a):(b) is usually 1:0À01-5, and the weight ratio of (a):(c) is 100:1-100. In Examples IXIII peptizing agents are prepared from polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride and polyethylene polyamine or pentaerythritol or polyethylene polyamine then CS 2 , or from N-octadecyl propylene diamine and formaldehyde. These are used in oil to assist the reaction of aqueous ammonium or sodium molybdate or dilute sulphuric acid with complexes which are bariumoverbased, carbonated N-octadecyl propylene diamine/formaldehyde, polyisobutene/P 2 S 5 , polyisobutenylthiophenol, nitrated polyisobutene, or polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride, or Ba, Ca, Mg or Sr overbased petrosulphonic acid or Ca overbased oleic acid. They may be incorporated, with conventional additives, into lubricating oils and greases.
