Abstract
1,242,009. Photo-electric measurement of absorption by fluids. BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc. Dec.10, 1968 [Feb.16, 1968], No.58608/68. Heading G1A. [Also in Divisions G2 and G4] Apparatus for measuring properties such as turbidity, colour, density &c. of a fluid sample according to the absorption of light thereby comprises an elongated tubular probe member 18 having a deformation, defining spaced transparent surfaces 19, 20, which is filled when the probe is immersed in the liquid. Light from a source 10, Fig. 1, passes through one or more wavelength selecting filter wheels 42, light guide 24 and the sample in the test tube to a photo-cell 22. A chopper 16 synchronously chops the light passing to the light guide 24 and to a reference photo-cell 44. The output of photo-cell 22, temperature compensated by thermistor 36 is amplifed and synchronously demodulated by a chopper transistor switched by an amplified signal from the reference photo-cell 44, and the demodulated signal displayed on a meter and printed. A series of test tubes on a conveyer may be sequentially elevated into operative association with the photo-meter each until the change of temperature at its fluid level is detected by a thermistor 38.
