Abstract

1,241,970. Bleaching textiles. COLGATE PALMOLIVE CO. 29 Oct., 1968 [31 Oct., 1967], No. 51195/68. Heading DIP. [Also in Division C5] A bleaching composition in dry particulate form used in an aqueous medium to bleach fabrics, e.g. of cotton, nylon or polyester fibres, comprises a chlorine-containing bleaching agent, an optical brightener which is a sulphonated stilbyl triazole or a triazinyl stilbene sulphonic acid or a salt thereof, and a watersoluble salt that is a reducing agent in the presence of the chlorine-containing bleaching agent. The chlorine-containing bleaching agent may be calcium hypochlorite, trichloroisocyanuric acid or dichloroisocyanuric acid or a sodium or potassium salt thereof. Suitable optical brighteners are those of the formulae: The reducing agent may be sodium or potassium sulphite or hypophosphite, or sodium thiosulphate dodecylbenzene sulphinate, toluene sulphinate, benzene sulphinate, perborate or percarbonate. The composition may also contain a builder material, e.g. sodium tripolyphosphate, carbonate, sulphate or chloride, potassium carbonate, sodium or potassium silicate, borox, trisodium phosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, pentapotassium tripolyphosphate or nitrilotriacetic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof, an anionic detergent, e.g. a water salt soluble olefin sulphonate, paraffin sulphonate or higher fatty acid alkali metal soap having an alkyl group of 8-22 carbon atoms, an alkyl mono- or polynuclear aryl sulphonate having 10-16 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, a sulphated higher fatty acid monoglyceride, an alkali metal salt of a sulphated fatty alcohol containing 10-18 carbon atoms, an alkali metal salt of a higher fatty acid ester of a low molecular weight alkylol sulphonic acid, a fatty ethanolamide sulphate, a fatty acid amide or an amino alkyl sulphonic acid, sodium toluene sulphonate, sodium xylene sulphonate or sodium naphthalene sulphonate, colouring materials, perfumes, corrosion inhibitors, binders and suds supressors. The composition may be packaged in a packet of water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol film.
