Abstract
1,241,883. Centrifugal separator. G. EBERLE [trading as ANDREAS HETTICH]. 10 April, 1969 [13 April, 1968], No. 18426/69. Heading B2P. A centrifuge bucket for receiving a fragile sample test vessel, for example a blood bottle, is so constructed as to compensate for the pressure exerted on the interior surface of such a test vessel during centrifuging- of the contents thereof. As illustrated in Figure 1, a centrifuge bucket 1 comprises a threadably removable cover 2 and a threadably removable lid 3 having a central aperture 3' for receiving a test vessel 22. The interior of the bucket is provided with a lining 4 of rubber. Formed within the wall 17 of the bucket to extend longitudinally thereof is at least one bore 7. A piston 6 is contained in the or each bore and is retained therein by a projection 5' formed on a thickened edge portion 5 of the lining. The or each bore communicates via a bore 10, an intermediate space 11 and a bore 12 with a pressure compensating space 13 defined by the rubber lining and by a bucket end wall 11' and provided with radially extending channels 13'; the various bores, spaces and channels are filled with liquid so that, upon application of centrifugal force to the bucket, the or each piston exerts on the liquid in its associated bore a pressure which is transmitted through the liquid to act in directions 14 and 16 upon the lining, and hence upon the exterior of the test vessel. in opposition to the centrifugal pressure exerted in direction 9 on the interior of the test vessel by contents thereof which are being centrifuged. The bore associated with the or each piston also may contain a spring 8 for moving the piston in the direction 9' when the application of centrifugal force is terminated, an air vent channel 20 allowing such return movement of the piston. The rubber lining may have a varying thickness in order that the forces exerted by the liquid can be so distributed over the surface of the test vessel as to give protection to those portions 19 thereof which are especially prone to breakage and in order to prevent the test vessel from sliding out of the bucket by reason of the force exerted on the test vessel by the liquid in opposition to the centrifugal force. The outside of the bucket may be provided either with grooves, see Figure 2 (not shown), or with pins for cooperating with corresponding pins or grooves provided on the head of a centrifuge (not shown) in order that the bucket may pivot freely during centrifuging.
