Abstract

[Also in Division G1] A drafting instrument comprises a straight edge 1, a carriage 12 mounted to slide parallel to the edge 1 on a guide bar 11, a further straight edge 14 being pivotally mounted on the carriage 12 for movement about a screw 16, the edge 14 projecting beyond the edge 1 for the drawing of lines transversely thereto, and a plurality of rollers 5 on a shaft 4 located in a channel section part 2 of the instrument away from the edge 1, the part 2 serving as a finger grip for a user, and the rollers 5 projecting below the under-face of the instrument, whereby the straight edge 1 can be displaced on the rollers 5 for the ruling of a series of parallel lines. The rollers 5 shown are coaxial but more than two rollers may be provided disposed on different but parallel axes. The edge of the instrument adjacent the channel section 2 is formed with a series of arcuate portions 7, the radii of the different portions being indicated numerically as at 8. Additionally or alternatively linear portionsÀmay be provided at differing angles of obliquity to the edge 1. The instrument is preferably of transparent plastics material and is formed with circular and other shaped apertures to act as stencils. Graduated circular arcs 31 are also provided for use as a protractor. The bar 11 is supported in trunnions 9, 10 which are adjustable on the instrument to ensure that the bar is parallel to the edge 1. The carriage 12 slides in brackets 13 on the bar 11, and carries an angular scale 21 co-operating with a fiducial line 20 on the pivotable straight edge 14 allowing the edge to be set at any desired angle relative to the edge 1. A milled edged nut on the screw 16 allows the manual locking of the edge 14 in a set angular position. With the nut slackened a point of a pencil or the like inserted in one of a series of apertures 22 in the edge 14 allows arcs of circles of radii corresponding to the apertures 22 to be drawn. In a modification curved members may be mounted on the carriage 12 intended for use as French curves. These members may be additional to or a replacement for the straight edge 14.
