Abstract

[Also in Division E2] A control mechanism comprises an inner member having longitudinally spaced recesses, location means engageable in any one of the recesses, an outer member having a first bore for the inner member, a second bore terminating at its inner end in the first bore, for accommodating the locating means, and a resilient band or clip attached about the outer member and extending across the outer end of the second bore to bias the locating means into engagement with the inner member, the arrangement being such that in operation, relative longitudinal movement of the inner member in the first bore allows the locating means to resiliently engage each recess in turn to provide positive location of the inner member at intervals along the locus of the relative longitudinal movement. As shown in Fig. 1, in a carburetter choke control mechanism, an operating rod 13, to which a choke cable 17 is attached, is slidable in a part 4 of a body 1 against a spring-loaded ball 18 which is biased into engagement with a part of the rod 13 having peripheral grooves 15, whereby to provide a positive step-by-step location of the rod 13. In another arrangement, Figs. 3 and 4, the bore 10 for the ball 18 extends circumferentially of a body part 3 and the grooves 15 are replaced by a channel 20 and the rod 13 having recesses such that the base extends longitudinally in the form of a sinusoidal curve. A locking ring 21 is provided about the body part 3 and is apertured at 22 for the ball 18 which is resiliently retained by a clip 19<SP>1</SP>. The arrangement provides for positive locking of the rod 13 by twisting the rod 13 to cause the ball 18 to be shafted into the circumferential part of the bore 10 and to be wedged between the ring 21 and recessed part of the rod 13. In a further arrangement, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), in which the rod (13) is grooved as in Fig. 1, a rotatable sleeve (23) is interposed between the rod (13) and portions (2) and (3) of the body (1) whereby upon rotation of the sleeve, the ball (18) is carried into a circumferential extension of the bore (10) and is wedged between a groove (15) and the inner surface of a locking ring (21), to prevent longitudinal movement of the rod (13) In all arrangements, the ball 18 may be replaced by a roller.
