Abstract
1,241,170. Vents for oil tanks. W. S. MARTIN. 11 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967], No. 47601/ 67. Heading A5A. [Also in Division F2] A vent device for petroleum storage tanks or oil cargo tanks on oil tankers has a framework 22 adapted to be positioned in a rectangularly sectioned duct leading from the tank and provided with a pair of flaps hinged at 30 and biassed by springs 32 to the closed position in which they abut triangular side frames 22. Flow of gas from the tank as liquid is entering the tank automatically opens the vent, the cross-sectional area of the opening of which varies with the rate of flow. The flaps 8 in the case of the storage tanks have central openings closed by internal hinged spring-closed wire mesh flame screens (36) which open when the tank is being emptied. In the case of an oil cargo tank the flaps may be biassed by weights (84) and the flaps may have openings closed by weight-biassed flaps, one of which opens on excess pressure in the tank and the other on under-pressure on emptying the tank. Alternatively internal spring-closed solid metal plates close the openings. A flame screen (70) may be positioned in the duct below the framework.
