The dirt absorption of pigment dyeings and prints containing binders or fibrous materials is reduced by adding to the dye liquor or print paste a copolymer which comprises a) 15-85% by weight of at least one polymerizable monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acid, b) 0-10% of one or more monomers having at least two polymerizable double bonds, c) 0-10% of one or more monomers capable of crosslinking in the presence of the copolymer d) 0-20% of one or more monomers which form water-soluble polymers and which are devoid of carboxylic acid groups and e) the amount required to make up 100 % of at least one monomer which forms a water-insoluble polymer. Examples of constituent a) are, acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric, maleic, crotonic, itaconic and α-chloroacrylic acid, of b) diallyl phthalate and butanediol diacrylate, of c) the amide and 3-chloro-2-hydroxy propyl ester of acrylic and methacrylic acids, of d) vinyl sulphonic acid and its salts, N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-acryloylpyrrolidone, and polymerizable betaines, of e) vinyl acetate, propionate and pivalate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, and esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids. Preferably 2.5-25 parts by weight of the copolymer is used to 1000 parts by weight of dye liquor or print paste.
