Abstract

1,240,410. Adipic acid. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES OF AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND.Ltd. 13 Nov., 1969.[14 Nov., 1968], No. 55606/69. Heading C2C. Adipic acid is obtained by treating adiponitrile at 'temperatures above 100‹ C. and at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure with aq. HCl until substantially all nitrile and -amide groups have been hydrolysed, cooling the reaction mixture, recovering a crude adipic acid/ ammonium chloride mixture and leaching said mixture with an ether, preferably dioxan, and recovering adipic acid. The process may be carried out continuously, preferably in a tubular reactor. A continuous reaction sequence is described. Examples are given which illustrate the process.
