Abstract
1,240,294. Plating styrene polymers; electroplating. COSDEN OIL & CHEMICAL CO. July 17, 1968 [April 8, 1968], No.34101/68. Heading C7B and C7F. Prior to metal plating, the surface of a styrene polymer is contacted with a fluid comprising a solvent for said polymer, and, as diluent, a non- solvent therefor, until the said surface has absorbed 0À1 to 3 gms solvent/sq.ft. The styrene polymer may be polystyrene, SAN or ABS, possibly containing rubber, and the solvent is applied (1) in solution (2) as a dispersion, or (3) in the gas phase. The said solvent may be a C 6 -C 24 aromatic hydrocarbon, possibly substituted, a C 5 -C 15 alkane, a C 4 -C 18 alkene, a C 5 -C 24 alicyclic hydrocarbon or terpene, or a halogenated C 1 -C 12 hydrocarbon, or a commercial solvent mixture. The said non-solvent may be a C 1 -C 4 alkanol or a C 3 -C 5 ketone, DMF, dimethyl- or diethylsulphoxide, and water may be added to give a fluid ternary system. Where a dispersion is used, this may be solvent/water or solvent/water/non- solvent (in insufficient amount to give a homogeneous solution), in each case there being added, if desired, a surfactant such as an ethoxylated phenol, polyoxy propylene, fatty acid, alcohol, amine, diamine, or amide, or a derivative thereof, an alkali metal soap, or a sulphonate. NaOH or KOH may be added to the dispersion to give PH >11. Vapour contact uses the above-mentioned solution (solvent + non-solvent) at 70‹-200‹F. The solvent generally constitutes 0À25-25 vol.% of the treating fluid and contact with the polymer is for “-30 minutes. After the fluid treatment the polymer is oxidized with a saturated solution of Cr<SP>R</SP> in H 2 SO 4 of S. G. < 1À67, and then treated with a 0À001- 15 wt% solution of one of said ethoxy-containing surfactants esterified with a strong organic or multi-basic mineral acid, and then activated using a colloidal suspension of noble metal, e.g. Pt, Pd, Au or Rh. Activation may be followed by oxidation with HClO 4 or FdCl 2 , and electroless plating with Ni, followed by electro-deposition of Cu. Electroless deposition of Cu, Co, Ag, As, Cr, Fe, Au, Pd or Pt instead of Ni is referred to.
