Abstract

1,240,039. Plate heat exchangers. AVON RUBBER CO. Ltd. 21 April, 1970 [21 Jan., 1969], No. 3415/69. Heading F4S. In a heat exchanger plate stack wherein adjacent plates are separated and spaced apart by gaskets, these are attached to at least some of the plates in the stack by moulding the gasket in situ on one or both sides of the plate, forming, punching or polishing operations being performed on the plate after the moulding thereon of the gasket. Particularly mentioned as suitable gasket materials are polyvinyl chloride (where the operating temperature is suitable), and synthetic rubbers, e.g. nitrile, fluorocarbon or silicon rubbers. Any suitable moulding process may be utilized and preferably the gasket is bonded to the plate by vulcanizing, adhesion being assisted by a coating of a chemical adhesive on the plate before moulding, where gaskets are moulded at corresponding locations on opposite sides of the plate these can be united through holes provided in the plate at these locations enabling the gasket material to flow thereinto during moulding. The gasket may be a peripheral gasket and/or a gasket encircling a by-pass port in the plate.
