Abstract
1,239,850. Paint stripping composition. PYRENE CO. Ltd. 30 Dec., 1969 [30 Dec., 1968], No. 63296/69. Addition to 1,229,779. Heading C5D. An aqueous composition for removing paint from metallic surfaces comprises an alkali metal hydroxide, an alkylene glycol aryl ether and an organic nitrogen compound of formula wherein Q represents phenyl, naphthyl or cyclohexyl, R represents C 1 -C 5 alkylene, R<SP>1</SP> is H, C 1 -C 5 alkyl or C 1 -C 5 hydroxyalkyl, R<SP>11</SP> is C 1 -C 5 alkyl, OH or SO 3 H, y is 0 or 1, z is 0, 1, 2 or 3, x is 1, 2 or 3, the compound having a boiling point of at least 100‹ C. and a molecular weight of not more than 500, for such time and at such a temperature that there is at least substantial loosening of the coating on the surface without appreciable attack on the surface itself. Typical accelerator components are ethylene glycol monophenylether with phenyldiethanolamine, benzyldiethanolamine, bis-hydroxypropylaniline, aniline, cyclohexylamine, 2 - naphthylamine - 1 - sulphonic acid, p-aminophenol, or o- or p-phenyldiamine. Optional additions are (a) alkali metal carbonate, silicate or phosphate, (b) gluconio acid or a salt thereof, (c) a surfactant, (d) rinsing, dispersing or scenting agent. The composition may be in the form of a concentrate for dilution with water when used for paint stripping at temperatures up to 90- 100‹ C. The compositions are effective in removing acrylic, alkyd, epoxy, and vinyl resins and rubbers from metallic surfaces.
