Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In power-assisted rack and pinion steering mechanism, the rack housing has an outward radial projection thereon and resilient means are disposed between opposite sides of the projection and a part, separate from the rack housing, of the mechanism or mounting means thereon, the arrangement being such that initial rotation of the pinion from the straight-ahead position is absorbed in part by compression of the resilient means to provide, in effect, lost motion between the pinion and rack. This is said to provide a reduced steering ratio at or near the straight ahead position. As shown, the rack housing 10 has a bracket 16 for attachment to the vehicle chassis 15, and the pinion 1 is mounted in a housing 14 positioned on the rack housing 10 by rubber or plastics rings 12 located on either side of an annular projection 13. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the rack housing has a projecting mounting bracket slidably connected by a pin to mounting means securable to the vehicle chassis and carrying conical resilient blocks arranged on either side of the bracket. The blocks may have voids formed therein to produce desired compression characteristics.
