Abstract

1,239,575. Bobbin winding. IVANHOE RESEARCH CORP. 11 June, 1968 [12 June, 1967], No. 27692/68. Heading D1C. [Also in Division F1] The sewing machine bobbin 34 is replenished with thread by rotating the bobbin in situ by a flow of air, a metered length of thread being supplied from a cop 38 and blown through a thread injection tube 44 to present one end of the thread to the rotating bobbin to be entrained thereby. The bobbin, which is of plastics material including a hub 72 of low friction plastics material, has turbine vanes 36 formed on the outer surface of one flange 37, small diameter wires 74 being provided at the hub to form thread entraining elements. The bobbin 34 and its case 28 are located in a stationary basket (24, fig. 3 not shown) within a rotating or oscillating hook. When a workpiece W has been sewn, exhausting the bobbin thread, the machine is stopped, by means not described, with the needle raised and solenoid valves 63, 67 energised to cause a piston in cylinder 48 to raise a block 46 carrying the thread injection tube 44 through which air flows from conduit 68, the free end of the tube 44 entering aligned holes in the now stationary hook, the basket 24 and case 28. Air flowing from conduit 65 has mean while accelerated bobbin 34 to a high rotational speed, the thread end presented by the tube 44 engaging and being drawn in to the bobbin after a thread clamp 54 has been released by passing above the end of a fixed guide rail 56. When the bobbin has wound on the length of thread metered out by device 40 to the taut thread actuates switch 75 to close valve 67. As the block 46 descends the clamp 56 engages rail 56 and clamps the thread while a hook 76 on the block actuates a lever 78 to swing a thread positioner arm 85, 86 to pull the thread beneath the bobbin case tension spring 32 and place the thread in a position to be picked up when stitching recommences. Further descent of the block 46 rotates the twisted strip 100 to cause blade 95 to cut the thread, a switch 107 being finally operated to close valve 63 and cut the air supply to the bobbin and the thread injection tube.
