Abstract

1,239,519. Joint-making packing. FELT PRODUCTS MFG. CO. 25 Nov., 1969 [6 Dec., 1968 (2)], No. 57616/69. Heading F2B. A cylinder head gasket assembly 10 comprises a first gasket 40 having a cylinder opening 60 or openings therein and a metallic centrally apertured second gasket 62 which is secured with clearance within the or each opening 60 by spaced peripheral tongues 70 integral with the gasket 62 and projecting some over and some under the gasket 40. The gasket 40 comprises a sheet metal layer 42 sandwiched between two asbestos layers 46 and the gasket 62 comprises a U-section metal annulus 64 enclosing a wire ring 66. The tongues 70 extend from the flanks 65 of the annulus 64 and alternately overlie and underlie the gasket 40. Oil and water apertures 48 and bolts holes (50, Fig. 1) are provided in the gasket 40. In a modification, Fig. 7, the tongues 70a, 70b are integral with one flank 65a of the annulus 64a and during assembly the tongues 70b are first bent upwardly and, after the gasket 62a is positioned in the opening 60, are then bent over at their free ends to form the holding portion 74.
