Abstract

1,239,468. Refractory metal carbides. UGINECARBONE. 15 Nov., 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 54374/68. Heading C1A. Refractory metal carbides in fine powder form are prepared by suspending carbon in an aqueous solution of pH #7 of at least one salt, preferably the chloride, of at least one of the metals, increasing the pH of the solution by the addition of, for example, concentrated ammonia in order to completely precipitate the metal hydroxides, washing and roasting the resultant gel so that it contains only oxides and carbon, and reacting these together by heating at a temperature of from 1600‹ to 2000‹ C. under vacuum or under a reducing atmosphere. Specified metals are Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, U, Th and the lanthanides. The carbon is preferably added in the form of lampblack or acetylene black and the final products advantageously have a free carbon content of 1% maximum, a mean particle size of less than 2 Á, and a specific BET surface area of between 1 and 3 m.<SP>2</SP>/g.
