Abstract

1,239,454. Universal joints. NETZSCH MASCHINENFABRIK GEB. 18 Oct., 1968 [21 Oct., 1967], No. 49571/68. Heading F2U. [Also in Division F1] A toothed coupling comprises two members rotating about axes which intersect but are inclined at an angle to one another, the two members respectively having external and internal interengaging teeth 40, 38, Fig. 2, and thrust faces 52, 58, the thrust face of one member being of conical form and that of the other being such as to engage it along a generatrix. Hub 32, Fig. 2, which has conical thrust faces 50, 52, and external teeth 38 is splined to shaft 30. The mating teeth 40 are connected to a rotor 12 by springs 44. If the axial force is directed to the right in Fig. 2 the hub 32 rolls round the thrust plate 46 so that in any position of rotation contact is made along a different generatrix thereby permitting the penetration of lubricant between the thrust faces. In other embodiments the housing thrust faces are conical and the hub thrust faces are flat or all thrust faces are conical. The couplings may drive a rotor (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), in a pump in which the rotor rotates about its axis whilst the axis orbits about the axis of the pump.
