Abstract

1,238,821. Centrifugal separator. COMBUSTION, ENG. Inc. 16 March, 1970 [17 March, 1969], No. 12574/70. Heading B2P. A centrifuge for separating a slurry into its solid and liquid constituents comprises a rotary bowl 15, a coaxial rotary conveyor 22 for moving the separated solids along the bowl towards a discharge opening 19, and a slurry feed pipe 13 having an outlet 14 within the tubular body 24 of the conveyor, the body 24 having circumferentially spaced openings 27, in the region thereof which rotates about the feed pipe outlet 14 in operation, for the passage of slurry through the body of the bowl interior, each of the openings 27 having a straight trailing (with respect to the direction of rotation of the body) edge extending parallel to the conveyor axis. As shown, the openings 27 are rectangular. An orifice member in the form of a rectangular apertured plate 28 made of alumina is fastened, with the interposition of a rubber sealing gasket 33, to the inside of the tubular body 24 at the location of each of the openings 27 to form a dam whereby, in operation, a pool of slurry is formed at the leading (with respect to the direction of rotation of the tubular body) side of the dam or the inside surface of the tubular body and rotates therewith. The slurry when fed meets the rotating pool rather than the inside surface of the tubular body thereby avoiding excessive erosion of the latter. The rotating pool also serves to accelerate the slurry towards the speed of rotation of the tubular body before discharge of the slurry through the openings. Each orifice member 28 preferably overhangs its associated opening at the trailing edge thereof so that essentially all wear occurs on the member itself instead of on the conveyor body 24.
