Abstract

1,238,636. Cable-operated levers for internal shoe drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 26 Feb., 1970 [1 March, 1969; 12 Dec., 1969], Nos. 11033/69 and 60631/69. Heading F2E. A form of blank from which may be made an actuating lever within a.brake drum for emergency or parking application is shown in Fig. 3. Modifications of the lower end are shown in Figs. 7 and 12 respectively. To make the lever, the lug 18, 19, Fig. 3, is bent at right angles to the body portion 14 about a fold line which passes across the open-ended slot 20. An analogous operation is performed on the modified levers of Figs. 7 and 12. The lever is pivotally attached to a shoe 1, Fig. 1, by a pivot pin 9 which .passes through upper opening 16, Fig. 3, and is held by a circlip 24, Fig. 1. The body portion (8 on Figs. 1 and 2) lies between the web of the shoe and a backplate 4. The bent-up lug has formed an abutment 23, Fig. 2. To secure cable 10, the lever 8. has to be moved angularly by some other means in a brake-applying (counter-clockwise) direction until abutment 23 lies outside the projected area of the shoe web. Thereafter, boss 25 on the end of cable 10 may be manipulated through the open end of the slot 20, Fig. 3, or 31, Fig. 7, or through the larger portion 38 of opening 37, Fig. 12, and the cable may be slid along until it occupies the closed inner end in each case. Fig. 16 shows the lever formed from the blank of Fig. 12 with the .cable .in place, though the abutment 41 points in the opposite direction to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A notch (35 in Fig. 16) is provided in the vicinity of the pivot hole for engagement .with one of the bifurcated ends of a strut .11 which transmits actuation to the right-hand shoe 2.
