Abstract
1,238,515. Testing contact and spark gap chambers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 15, 1969 [Oct. 15, 1968], No.48726/68. Heading G1U. The pressure of the residual gas in an evacuated contact 15, 16 or spark gap chamber bounded by a cylindrical glass or ceramic casing 12 and metal end plates 13, 14, is determined by applying a longitudinal magnetic field, e.g. by a coil 31 or by a permanent magnet not shown, to the chamber, by applying a high voltage, e.g. 4kv, to the spaced electrodes, and by measuring 30 the resulting current. The current may take as long as a minute to build up, and it may require the assistance of radioactivity from a source of the order of 10 to 20 millicuries. The chamber 12 includes an isolated metal cylinder 23, 26 to protect its walls, cylinders 24 and 25 connected to respective electrodes 15, 16, and a further cylindrical casing 28 surrounding a bellows 21.
