Abstract

1,238,440. Nacreous pigments; artificial pearls. MAY & BAKER Ltd. 6 Sept., 1968 [8 Sept., 1967], No. 4507/71. Headings C4A and C4X. Nacreous pigments comprising a plurality of thin, clear, homogeneous layers of TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , or alkaline earth metal titanate, each layer interleaved with a thin, clear, homogeneous layer of an organic film-forming substance containing hydroxyl, carboxylic anhydride, carboxylic ester, or other groups reactive with titanic, zirconic or alkaline earth metal titanic ester groups, the refractive index of the inorganic exceeding that of the organic layers by at least 0À05, are claimed per se. The pigments are prepared by a process analogous to that of the parent application, to give the same individual layer thicknesses and final particle sizes. In the examples the following organic interleaving agents are used: (1) cellulose diacetate, (2) ethyl hydroxy ethyl cellulose, (a) polyvinyl acetal, (b) polyvinyl butyral, (c) partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, (d) nitrocellulose, (e) a sulphonamide/formaldehyde resin, (f) a silicone glycol copolymer, (g) a methyl vinyl ether/ maleic anhydride copolymer, (h) a methyl vinyl ether/ethyl hydrogen maleate copolymer, (i) a p-t-butyl - phenol/formaldehyde resin, (j) a phenol-formaldehyde resin, and (k) ethyl cellulose.
