Abstract

1,238,438. Electrostatic separation. NIPPON KOGEI KOGYO CO., Ltd. 14 May, 1970 [29 Dec., 1969], No. 23494/70. Heading B2J. [Also in Division E1] Particles of floating dust are removed from a tunnel excavation by providing a plurality of electrodes positioned within the tunnel and applying a high potential to the electrodes so as to charge the particles within the tunnel by forming an electric field between the inner wall of the tunnel and the electrodes. As shown in Fig. 2 and 4 electrodes 8 are suspended from the top portion of the arch posts 2 which are provided between the excavating portion 3 and a shield plate 5. The electrodes are connected through a high potential cable 7 to a source of high potential 6. If a negative high potential with respect to the ground is applied to the electrodes, negative ions are generated which force the dust particles onto the walls of the tunnel. A device may be provided for shutting off the electrical circuit should a short circuit occur by an electrode falling to the ground. In a modification means are provided for equidistantly spacing the electrodes comprising a plurality of resilient and flexible tubes of high molecular compound through which the electrodes are disposed and which have the end portions thereof exposed. The invention may also be used during the power excavation of the tunnel by providing an electrode on the excavator so as to form an electric field within the tunnel in order to remove the particles of dust covering the excavator when it is working.
