Abstract

123,823. Ford, T. March 7, 1918. Hollow-ware.-Relates to machines for forming shouldered ends upon syrup tins and other containers, of various shapes of cross-section, the ends being made parallel with the bodies cr tapered, and with external or internal helical threads thereon. Fig. 7 shows a container o with the end e reduced by the machine, forming a shoulder c. The container is held by an expanding core engaging that part not to be reduced, while a die made in semicircular halves compresses the end e on to a block v. The die halves a engage one another by one or more teeth d which act as guides and are fully mated only when the die halves are entirely closed. The teeth d prevent the formation of ridges on the work. The expanding core consists of two or more parts m guided by keys and slots and moved radially by links q connecting them to a rotatable spindle p. A spring-pressed stop y determines the length of the portion e to be reduced, the stop being fixed in any adjusted position by a screw 4.
