Abstract
1,238,209. Film width monitoring device. BELOIT CORP. 14 Oct., 1968, No. 48576/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division G1] The width of a moving tubular film 13 may be controlled by pneumatic sensing heads 14, 16 which have air jets 24, 22 directed towards tapered sensors 23, 25 mounted on U springs 31, 37. Parts of the springs cover and act as valves over the ends of passages 33, 40 connected through valves 34, 41 to a static pressure air supply. If the film changes its width during manufacture then the position of its edges 13a, 13b relative to the orifices and sensors determines the quantity of air which is interrupted by the edges or impinges on what side of the tapered sensors. If, for example, the film increases in width by moving its edge 13a in the direction of the arrow 36, then less air from the orifice 22 will impinge on one side of the sensor 23 and the force of the sensor on the end of the passage 33 will decrease in pressure. This decrease in pressure in the passage 33 is used by an actuator 11, see also Fig. 4 (not shown), to move the sensor 23 in a direction opposite to that of the arrow 36, until the tapered point is over the edge 13a again. The actuator 11, however, is rigidly but adjustably connected by a rod 19 to a similar actuator 10 mounting the sensor 25, so both actuators move in the direction of arrow 29, that is in a direction opposite to the increased width of the film. The actuator 10, however, is connected to a vacuum and differential pressure valve 45, itself connected to a static pressure passage 40 and to a device for correcting the film width, so that as the actuator 10 is moved by the actuator 11 the sensor 25 is moved relative to its jet 24 and operates to vary the pressure in passage 40. This variation in pressure in 40 is transmitted to the valve 45 which signals the film width correcting device accordingly. Should the width of the film vary by movement of the edge 13b then actuator 10 will move directly, but should the film move laterally without varying its width then the device will merely recentralize as a whole over the film.
