An aid for filtering water-suspended, swellable silicate minerals, e.g. zircon, cordierite, steatite, talc, kaolin, porcelain paste or slurries of limestone-clay or of lime marl used as cement raw materials consists of a water-soluble, basic nitrogen-containing compound used in an amount of 0À005-0À2% based on the weight of the solids. In the treatment of cement raw materials the filtration aid can be added to a limestone-clay slurry or to a clay slurry to which the limestone is then added. Suitable nitrogen containing compounds can be prepared by condensing formaldehyde with a compound of the formula wherein R 1 represents H,-CN or -CO.NH 2 or by condensing an aliphatic polyamine with cyanamide, dicyanamide, dicyandiamidine or guanidine.
