Abstract
1,237,858. Adenine and 4,5-dicyanoimidazole. AJINOMOTO CO. Inc. 22 Sept., 1969 [5 Oct., 1968], No. 46677/69. Addition to 1,010,256. Heading C2C. Adenine is prepared by heating HCN, or a mixture of an alkali metal cyanide with a substantially equivalent amount of the ammonium salt of an acid stronger than HCN, in liquid ammonia in the presence of a carboxylic acid, having at least 3 carbon atoms, which is soluble in liquid ammonia, or the ammonium salt of said carboxylic acid, the quantity of water, if any, present in the reaction system being not greater than 10 mole per cent of the total reaction system. The temperature of the reaction is 60-200‹ C., preferably from 70-150‹ C., employing from 1-10 moles liquid ammonia/ mole HCN or alkali metal cyanide, and suitable carboxylic acids are those of pK a between 4À0 and 5À1, e.g. propionic, butyric, isobutyric, valeric, trimethylacetic, cyclohexanecarboxylic, lactic, glycollic, valeric, aspartic, glutamic, benzoic, -methylbenzoic, o-, m- and p-aminobenzoic, m- and p-hydroxybenzoic, and phenylacetic acid. 4,5-Dicyano-imidazole is obtained as a by-product, which is separated, e.g. by selective extraction, absorption on a weakly basic anion exchange resin, or by formation of a water-insoluble salt, e.g. with lead or mercury.
