Abstract

1,237,799. Discharging arrangement for cyclones or filters. HILMAC CONSULTANTS (PTY) Ltd. 31 March, 1969, No. 16666/69. Headings BIT and B2P. [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A solids flow control valve for a separator, e.g. a cyclone separator or a fabric filter, comprises a flexible, e.g. rubber, diaphragm 5 made of at least three separate sector-shaped elements which, when the valve is closed, abut each other along their respective edges and when the valve is opened, flex outwardly to provide a central passage for the discharge of solids from the separator. The diaphragm is in the form of an inverted cone and is mounted within a shell 8 with its outer peripheral portion clamped against a flange 3 by which the shell is secured to the solids outlet of the separator. Each sector-shaped element has stiffening ribs 7 along the radial edges of the sector on the outer surface thereof. In operation, a negative pressure is created within the separator and serves to hold the sector-shaped elements together until the weight of accumulated solids overcomes the force created by the negative pressure. A central passage is thereupon formed by outward flexing of the elements permitting discharge of the solids. Immediately after discharge the elements flex inwardly to automatically close the valve. Inward flexing of the diaphragm elements is limited by stops 10 secured to the wall of the shell 8 and connected by flexible shanks 9 to the elements. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,170,966.
