Abstract

123,761. Aktiebolaget Ljungstr÷ms Angturbin. Feb. 18, 1918, [Convention date]. Railway locomotives, steam.-A locomotive provided with an air-cooled condenser is fitted with an appliance for ensuring that, while the speed of the locomotive varies, a uniform flow of air passes through the condenser. The condenser 1 is cooled by air collected by louvres 13 and forced through the condenser by fans 2 driven from the wheel axles or other suitable part. To secure a uniform flow of air, the fans are driven by friction disks 5 on shafts 19 which are geared together, suitably driven, and are longitudinally slidable by a piston 23. The position of the piston in its cylinder 24 regulates the gear ratio of the friction drive and thus the speed of rotation of the fans, levers 10 connected to the piston-rod and by connecting links 15 to the louvres correspondingly open or close the louvres. The regulating gear may be operated by a governor or by the difference in the air pressure on the inlet and outlet sides of the condenser by means of pipes 9 connected either directly to the ends of the cylinder 24 or, as shown, through a relay device 12 connected to a compressed air reservoir.
