Abstract
1,237,346. Preparation of methionine. STAMICARBON N.V. 16 Feb., 1970 [15 Feb., 1969], No. 7322/70. Heading C2C. In the preparation of methionine by a process comprising converting in a reaction zone #- methylmercapto-propionaldehyde under superatmospheric pressure and at a temperature between 0 and 60 C. into methionine nitrile with HCN and NH 3 (or NH 4 CN) using a reaction medium comprising ammonia and water, the resulting reaction mixture (containing methionine nitrile) is heated in a closed system to a temperature not more than 100 C., e.g. 65-75 C., and the mixture is expanded with removal of the gaseous NH 3 liberated, and then separated, with consequent cooling, into a waterrich liquid layer containing ammonia, and a liquid layer rich in methionine nitrile, the waterrich layer being recirculated to the reaction zone and the other layer being subjected to acid hydrolysis to form methionine.
