Abstract

1,237,124. Spin-drawing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Feb., 1969 [15 March, 1968], No. 12647/68. Heading B5B. A finish containing less than 10% by weight of water is applied to filaments during melt spinning of water-absorbing polymers after they have solidified and before drawing in a spindrawing process in which the draw ratio of a first drawing stage lies between 1À15 and 3À00. It is stated that filament breakage during drawing is reduced and that tenacity/extensibility values of the product are improved. The major constituent of the finish may be a relatively inert oily material of low volatility, e.g. hydrocarbon or vegetable oils, or such substances as butyl stearate. Examples of application to 840 denier, 140 filament nylon 66 tyre cords are given.
