Abstract

[Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A safety mechanism for stopping or reversing a power-operated door comprises a motordriven shaft 1, Fig. 1, which drives the door via a continuous chain driven by sprocket 21 carried on a cam 15 which has limited rotation on shaft 1. Cam 7, axially slidable on and rotatable with shaft 1, engages cam 15 to form a dog-clutch. Fig. 3. Each of the two projections on each cam have ramps 35, 37. Shaft 1 is also connected to cam 15 by a lost-motion device comprising a pin 25 projecting from opposite sides of the shaft and passing centrally through opposed slots 23 in cam 15. At the start of door movement the load on sprocket 21 and cam 15 is such that shaft 1 rotates relative to cam 15 and cam 7 will move axially along the shaft 1 against the bias of spring 17 because its ramps 35 or 37 slide on the mating ramps of cam 15. Cam 7 in sliding, actuates switch 39 to stop or reverse the door motion, but a time switch, actuated at the start of door movement, disables switch 39. Shaft 1 continues to rotate in the same direction, and pin 25 eventually engages the walls of slots 23 to further move the door. A short period after starting spring 17 is able to fully re-engage cams 7 and 15, thus centralizing pin 25 in slots 23, and the time switch re-activates switch 39. If the door movement is obstructed cam 7 again slides on shaft 1, but before the lost motion coupling takes up the drive the activated switch 39 stops or reverses the door motion. Switch 39 is preferably disabled during the complete dooropening movement. Switches 47 and 49 actuated by nuts 43 and 45, respectively, stop the door at the closed and open positions. The mating cam surfaces are preferably made of a low-friction material such as a glass-reinforced plastics material.
