Abstract

1,236,743. Crash barriers. CHRISTIANI & NIELSEN Ltd. 17 June, 1968 [16 Aug., 1967], No. 37792/67. Heading E1G. In a crash barrier wherein a rail 1 is carried by support arms 9 pivoted at 8 to base members 2, as in Specification 1,066,988, upward swinging movement of the arm on impact is damped by a hydraulic shock absorber 20 acting in compression between arm and base mountings 25, 18. The shock absorber 20 continues to damp movement even if the nail 1 forces the arm past the vertical plane through pivot 8, until the points 8, 18, 13 are aligned, whereafter the support yields by fracture of weak bolts 5. To allow a degree of longitudinal movement of the rail relative to the arm 9, the rail 1 is welded to a plate 16 carrying a rod 17 slidably mounted in a bracket 14 pivotally bolted at 13 to the arm 9. The shock absorber 20, Fig. 4, (not shown) comprises a variable-resistance piston and cylinder assembly as in Specification 236,744 the piston (31) having a slot (32) engaging a longitudinal bar (30) of varying cross-section to provide a controlled leakage of oil. In a modification the base 2 carries opposed inclined arms supporting two barrier rails.
