Abstract

1,236,693. Feeding sheets. HITACHI Ltd. 21 May, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 26040/69. Heading B8R. Sheets 23 piled on edge are separated in turn by a perforated suction belt 17 when permitted by a retaining finger 29 and fed between the belt 17 and a reversely moving belt 36 which rectifies double feed, and thence to a further belt 39, passing photoelectric detectors 41-44. When a sheet reaches the detector 41, the finger 29 moves to stop separation of the next sheet, the finger allowing separation when the sheet has passed the detector. For continuous sheet feed, when a sheet reaches the detector 43, then if a preceding sheet is still present at the detector 44, a clutch is opened to stop the belt 17 until the preceding sheet has cleared the detector 44, when the clutch is re-opened. For on-demand feed, every sheet is stopped when it reaches the detector 43 until the clutch is closed by an external feed signal. To avoid prevention of feeding of a sheet when said sheet is stopped with its leading edge past the detector 41 when the preceding sheet at the detector 43 stops the belt 17, so that when the belt re-starts the finger 29 is still in its stop position, the detector 42 is provided, which releases the finger as soon as the preceding sheet has cleared the detector 42.
