Abstract

1,236,580. Resistors. SANGAMO WESTON Ltd. 10 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 57820/67. Heading H1S. A resistor comprises a film-like insulating base carrying a resistive line pattern divided into sections by connections to a conductive deposit which initially shunts each resistive section, part of the deposit being broken to bring a resistive section into circuit between terminal portions of the conductive deposit. In the preferred embodiment shown, successive resistive line sections 22, 23 . . . 32, 33 bear an approximately 2: 1 ratio with each other, the smallest resistance being 22 at e.g. 0À25 ohms and the largest, 33 at 512 ohms. The line pattern and conductive deposit may be a copper/nickel alloy printed on to the base 10 which is of flexible plastics material. The conductors 34, 35 . . . 44 and interconnections such as 45 shunt each resistive section so that the terminals 15a, 15b are short-circuited. A section of the line pattern 11 is connected in series with the terminals by punching holes through appropriate portions 45 and the base portions thereunder. When the desired resistance value is obtained the resistor strip is coiled into a cylinder and secured by ties through the slots 21a. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) the line pattern is arranged into one group of ten sections, each of 10 ohms and a second group of twenty-two sections, each of 0À5 ohms. A conductive strip running along the edges of the base shunts each section and forms terminals at one end of the resistor. A shortcircuit strap dividing the two groups is retained intact if the desired total resistance is less than 10 ohms.
