1236104 Soldering; welding by fusion; cutting by fusion MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 20 Aug 1968 [18 Oct 1967] 59329/70 Divided out of 1236103 Headings F4W W55 W58 W45D and W21 [Also in Divisions B5 G2 and H5] An electric apparatus for heating, melting, welding, soldering and cutting workpieces comprises a reflector chamber 210 having a focus f 1 located within the chamber and a focus f 2 at a point outside the chamber, a source of radiation e.g. light source, disposed at focus f 1 , an opening 210<SP>1</SP> for the emergence of reflected radiation substantially towards focus f 2 , and a hollow frustoconical attachment 215 connected at its larger diameter end to the chamber at its opening 210<SP>1</SP>, the attachment 215 having a plurality of radial slots 217 on its periphery adjacent said end for the passage of a gas into the interior of the attachment. In use of the apparatus air is drawn into the apparatus through the slots 217 and emerges adjacent focus f 2 , the flow being caused by heating of gases in the interior of the apparatus. For welding or cutting a protective gas or oxygen, respectively, may be introduced into the chamber at 221. Preferably the focus f 2 is substantially in coincidence with the projected point of the attachment 215.
