Abstract

1,236,043. Laminating. BOSTIK Ltd. 30 Aug., 1968 [31 Aug., 1967], No. 41397/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] A surface of a first substrate which is to be bonded to a second substrate by means of adhesive composition is prepared by subjecting the surface to ultra-violet radiation, and applying polyisocyanate. The first substrate comprises polymeric material having a critical surface tension of wetting of not more than 35 dynes per centimetre as determined by contact angle measurements, the polymer molecules of the polymeric material having at least one hydrogen atom on a carbon chain of a repeating unit of the polymer molecule. The polymeric material may be polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyethylene, polypropylene, or a copolymer of ethylene, propylene and a minor proportion of a non-conjugated diene, or a copolymer of isobutylene and isoprene. A photosensitizer, e.g. benzophenone, acetophenone and benzoin 2-acetonaphthone may be applied to the surface prior to the radiation step. A solution of polyisocyanate may be spread over the irradiated surface, and the excess wiped off. An adhesive composition may be applied to the surface after the radiation step and the application of polyisocyanate composition are completed. Alternatively, the polyisocyanate may be applied to the surface after the irradiation step in admixture with the adhesive composition. Examples of suitable adhesive compositions are solutions of linear polyester glycol urethanes, polyether glycol urethanes, linear polyesters. The adhesive composition may be heat or solvent sensitive. Substrates so prepared may then be bonded by pressing them together. In the examples: (7) to (22) strips of ethylene-propylene 1,4-hexadiene terpolymer coated polyester fibre fabric are bonded using as adhesive a composition comprising a linear polyurethane in tetrahydrofuran; (26) to (34) strips of polyvinylfluoride resin film were bonded to form lap joints using a self-activatable adhesive comprising a linear polyurethane in tetrahydrofuran; (35) a polyethylene heel rise element is bonded to a rubber heel using a heat-activatable adhesive composition comprising a linear polyester glycol urethane in tetrahydrofuran; (37) portions of a polyester fabric coated with an ethylene-propylene-1,4-hexadiene terpolymer are bonded together using an adhesive composition comprising a copolyester in tetrahydrofuran; (38) portions of a fabric as in (37) are bonded using a heat activatable adhesive comprising a linear polyurethane in tetrahydrofuran; (39) surfaces of polypropylene tape are bonded using a heat activatable adhesive comprising a solution of a linear polyester urethane in tetrahydrofuran; (40) portions of polyester fabric coated with a rubbery copolymer of isobutylene and isoprene are bonded using a solvent activatable adhesive comprising a solution of a linear polyurethane in tetrahydrofuran.
