Abstract

1305772 Laminates BOSTIK Ltd 20 April 1970 [21 April 1969] 18718/70 Addition to 1236043 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] The surface of a first substrate is prepared for bonding to a second substrate by means of adhesive by subjecting the surface to ultraviolet radiation and applying polyisocyanate to the surface, the first substrate being of a composition comprising photosensitizer material and polymeric material having a critical surface tension at wetting of not more than 35 dynes per centimetre, polymer molecules of the polymeric material having at least one hydrogen atom of a carbon chain of a repeating unit of the polymer molecule. The photosensitizer may be a halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, chloroform, a ketone, e.g. benzophenone, acetophenone, benzoin, 2-acetonaphthene, or acenaphthene or fluorene. It is stated that the photosensitizers are grafted into the molecular chains of the polymer molecules of the substrate and provide groups which react with isocyanate. The photosensitizer may be distributed in the composition of a substrate, e.g. by milling. Residual photosensitizer may be wiped off the surface after radiation. The polymer of the first substrate may be polyethylene, polypropylene, copolymers of ethylene and propylene alone or with a minor amount of non- conjugated diene, e.g. 1.4 hexadiene, fluorinecontaining polymers, e.g. polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinylidene fluoride. Preferably the radiation step is carried out before the polyisocyanate is applied. Preferred polyisocyanates have NCO functionality of more than two, e.g. triphenyl methane triisocyanate, polyarylene polyisocyanate-NCO functionality 2.8, applied from solution in volatile organic solvents. The adhesive may be applied to the surface after the application of polyisocyanate or, alternatively, the polyisocyanate may be applied after the radiation step in admixture with the adhesive. Suitable adhesives are solutions of linear polyester glycol urethanes, polyether glycol urethanes, linear polyesters. The adhesive may be solvent- or heat-activatable. In an example a milled mixture comprising ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer, zinc oxide, stearic acid, carbon black, aromatic processing oil, mercaptobenzothiazole, dipentamethylene thiuram tetrasulphide, tetramethylthiuram disulphide, sulphur, tellurium diethyl dithiocarbonate, benzophenone was cured under pressure and sections of the cured resin subjected to ultra violet irradition and thereafter wiped with a solution of polyarylene, polyisocyanate in methylethyl ketone. The surfaces were then coated with an adhesive composition comprising N-tetrahydrofuran, a copolyester obtained by condensation of terephthalic acid, hexahydrophthalic anhydride and sebacic acid with cyclohexane dimethanol and butane diol. After drying the adhesive was heat-activated and surfaces of pairs of the sections pressed together.
