Abstract

1,235,551. Boring earth. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 30 Jan., 1969 [2 Feb., 1968], No. 5557/68. Heading E1F. A bent-sub having an end face 2 angled to provide a directional angle for deviation drilling comprises a body portion 3 having an arcuate surface 6 forming the knee contact area of the sub, arcuate stabilizing surface portions 8 on either side of the knee contact area and means-e.g. screw threads-to con nect the sub to a down hole motor and positioned so that the axis of the motor is offset from the mass centre of the sub towards the knee contact area. The surface 3 opposite the knee contact area may be curved as shown or be composed of two flat surfaces connected by a curved surface. In a modification the stabilizing surfaces are formed by two lengths of drill collar welded or bolted to the side of an ordinary bent-sub.
