Abstract

1,235,471. Treating gases containing entrained solid particles. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD AND ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd. 14 June, 1968 [16 June, 1967; 28 Nov., 1967], Nos. 27871/ 67 and 54029/67. Heading B1R. A method of separating entrained solid particles from a gas comprises contacting the gas with a smoke precursor at a temperature sufficient to volatize the smoke precursor, cooling the gas sufficiently to produce a deliquescent dispersion or a deliquescent coating on the entrained particles form the volatilized smoke precursor, and passing the gas in the presence of water vapour through a gas/solids separator. A smoke precursor is defined as a solid, free-flowing material capable of being volatilized into a gas at an elevated temperature and which on cooling produces a deliquescent dispersion in the gas or a deliquescent coating on solidscontained in the gas. Sulphonic acid is a suitable smoke precursor and may be introduced into the hot gas either in aqueous solution or entrained in a carrier gas. The gas/solids separator is preferably an electrostatic precipitator and the amount of water vapour in the gas passed to the separator is between 4 and 15% by weight. In a modified method the smoke precursor may be volatilized into a carrier gas which is introduced with or without cooling into the gas containing the entrained solids.
