1,235,466. Rear-view mirrors. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 27 Sept., 1968 [6 Oct., 1967], No. 45754/67. Heading B7J. In an interior rear-view mirror for vehicles, the reflective element 31, which has a generally triangular cross-section and has first and second reflecting surfaces having higher and lower reflectivities respectively, is fixedly mounted in a housing 11 having slots 14 in lugs 12 pivoted on posts 17 on a mounting plate 16 in the housing and which engages a support member 22 attachable to the vehicle, the housing 11 being urged by an over-centre mechanism 27 also in the housing into one of two positions, in one of which the small amount of incident light reflected by the second surface is directed towards the driver and the remainder of the light is reflected by the first surface elsewhere, and in the other position, the greater amounts of light from the first surface is directed towards the eyes of the driver. The over-centre mechanism comprises a spring 27 acting between the housing 11 and mounting plate 16 and is under greatest stress when it lies in the same plane as the plate 16. Integral with the mounting plate 16, is a hollow spigot 18 having part-spherical surfaces 19, 21 which engage complementary surfaces on a nut 25 and inside a recess 24 at one end of the support member 22 to form a ball-andsocket joint lockable by a bolt 26. The housing and the mounting plate are synthetic resin mouldings and the reflective element is also a transparent synthetic resin moulding having the first surface aluminized.
