A lasting machine includes a shoe rest 10, an insole plate 11 (which may apply adhesive along channel 16) which surrounds the shoe rest 10, wipers 7 and means for temporarily arresting the advance of the wipers 7 at a position (shown dotted) where the leading edges of the wipers 7 engage the lasting margin 25 and press the lasting margin 25 against the outer edge of the insole 8, the insole plate 11 being withdrawn while the wipers are temporarily arrested. A time delay device ensures that the insole plate 11 is not withdrawn until the wipers are temporarily arrested. In a first embodiment the time delay device is mechanical and consists of a moving control finger 13 which initially operates valve 14 to move piston 4 to the right (Fig. 1) and thus advance the wipers 7. The wipers 7 are temporarily arrested when a stop 1 on the piston rod 18 contacts an abutment surface on a wedge member 2. After a predetermined time delay the control finger 13 actuates valve 15 to cause piston 21 and cylinder 22 to lower the insole plate 11. During this movement a cam 34 on the piston rod 20 operates switch 26 which causes piston and cylinder 3 to raise the wedge member 2 and thus allow the wipers 7 to complete their wiping operation. In a second embodiment (not shown) the time-delay is provided by an electrical device, and in a third embodiment (not shown) the time delay is provided by the build-up in pressure to the left of piston 4, a counter-pressure being established to the right of piston 4 to ensure that the wedge 2 can be retracted without undue friction between the wedge 2 and stop 1.
