In a rotary electrical machine, e.g. alternator, having a brushless exciter which includes on the stator a primary excitation winding 13 and on the rotor a multi-phase secondary winding 14 coupled through rectifiers 15 to the machine D.C. field winding 12, a detector winding 17 on the stator and in electrical quadrature with the primary winding 13 is coupled to the secondary winding 14 to respond to pulsating air-gap flux produced by unbalanced currents in the secondary winding phases. By this the winding detects a fault in the excitation circuit, in particular of the rectifiers, and may operate an alarm or a protective device. Each rectifier may have a fuse 16, both stator windings 13, 17 may be distributed, and individual phases of the secondary winding 14 alternatively may be directly in parallel. The voltage induced in winding 17 may be smoothed by a filter.
