Abstract

1,234,722. Lap forming machines. REGINA GLASS FIBRE Ltd. 10 Feb., 1970 [18 Feb., 1969], No. 8695/69. Heading D1N. A fibre web is made by spinning glass filaments onto a drawing drum 2, scraping the filaments from the drum as staple fibres and delivering them in a current of air created by the rotation drum 2 within a shroud 4, delivering the fibre stream onto a conveyor as a web, impregnating and finishing the web. The process is characterised by guiding the staple fibres away from the drum along a feed axis which extends across and above the conveyor at an angle other than 90‹, thence downwardly into a delivery area which does not move. The size and shape of the outlet 6 of the duct 5 which guides the fibre stream can be varied to produce a desired fibre density pattern in the web, (see Figs. 2 to 5). The angle between the feed axis and the conveyor direction may be variable. The density of the deposited web may be sensed and any resulting variation in density determined used to produce a signal to a control device to alter the outlet 6 so as to compensate for irregularities in density.
