Abstract
1,234,455. Burner. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 25 June, 1968 [29 Aug., 1967], No. 30232/68. Heading F4T. A fluid fuel burner 10 comprises a cylindrical refractory lined combustion chamber 16 having a circular outlet at one end for discharging combustion products into a furnace 14 and a circular inlet 27, at the opposite end of the chamber 16 to the outlet, for the introduction of fuel and air, and an air swirl sleeve 38 communicating with inlet 27 for the introduction of swirling air into the combustion chamber 16, which sleeve 38 has a plurality of circumferentially placed air inlet nozzles 40 fixed tangentially to its exterior, and an annular fillet 26 diverging from the sleeve 38 to the internal wall of the combustion chamber 16 with an included angle substantially equal to the divergent angle of the fuel spray. Each inlet nozzle 40 includes a pair of adjacent side walls 56 perpendicular to one another, each opposed by a corresponding wall 58 convergent therewith. Air under pressure is supplied to the sleeve 38 by blower means connected to an air inlet flange 41 and the helical vortex of air produced in the sleeve 38 moves into the combustion chamber 16 where its expansion is regulated by the angular fillet 26. A cone 50 (not shown), fitted into sleeve 38, prevents rearward propagation of flame from the combustion chamber 16 past cone 50. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the interior of the combustion chamber converges inwardly towards the outlet end so that a well defined jet of combustion products is obtained from the outlet. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the air inlet nozzles 40 are constructed with uniform cross-section.
