Abstract

1,234,254. Mixing and emulsifying apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 26 June, 1968 [27 June, 1967], No. 30448/68. Heading B1C. [Also in Division C3] Apparatus for making dispersions of solids in liquids, or emulsions, comprises a rotor 10 and stator 12 having working faces 14, 15 of complementary contour (preferably planar as shown), a primary inlet 24, at least one secondary inlet 34 radially outward of the primary inlet, a peripheral outlet 21, and means for controlling the temperature profile across the stator; as shown, this comprises four separate, concentric circular channels 31 for fluid heat transfer media of different temperatures. Starting materials from hoppers 28, 39 are selected by multi-way valves 22, 40 and fed through heat exchangers 30, 38 by metering pumps 26, 23. Optional features include a saw-tooth rotor edge to assist discharge, a flared rim thereto (73, Fig. 3 not shown), means to adjust the rotor and bottom plate (61) in relation to the stator, and an inlet (67) in the bottom plate for pressure air to keep material from the underside of the rotor. In operation the working gap is preferably 0.001 to 0.100 inch and the peripheral speed of the rotor is 10,000 to 40,000 feet per minute. Examples relate to making a particulate dispersion of low molecular weight polyethylene in isobutyl alcohol, and an emulsion of polyethylene wax in water.
