Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A fabric is made by injecting fibres into a web in a direction normal to a major surface of the web and impregnating the web and injected fibres with a binder. The fibres are injected by means of a fibre-carrying and fibre-driving gas stream originating from a blower unit. The fibres become embedded in the web. The injected fibres may serve to link layers in the web together. The web can be made from threads, which may be crimped, yarns, twines, cords, ropes, strings, tresses, ribbons, braids and hoses. The strands can be woven, knitted, be present in one or more layers of fleeces or, as shown, the web can be formed by winding strands 23 around a tubular set of strands 20 and applying adhesive at nozzles 34. These strands can form a plurality of layers. The web strands or injected fibres can be glass, slag, stone, quartz, asbestos, cermet, and mixtures and compounds thereof, carbon or silicon or compounds thereof, cotton, kapok, flax, hemp, jute, Ramie or Chinese nettle, sisal, ixtle, sansevieria, Manila hemp, (zebu- or abacahemp), piassava, bauhina, esparto, coconut, specified wools, mohair, natural silk, alpaca, camelhair, polyester, polamide, polyacrylic, polystyrol, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl nitrile, or polyurethane. The fibres can be crimped. The binder may be a solution, liquid or paste.
