Abstract
1,233,833. Carbide compositions. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. June 13, 1969 [June 14, 1968], No.30233/69. Addition to 1, 205, 468. Headings C7A and C7D. A refractory particulate composition has an average grain size less than 10 microns and consists, apart from impurities, of Al 2 O 3 10 to less than 20 vol % Ti, Hf and/or Zr carbide up to 89 vol % Fe, Co and/or Ni 5-90 wt % #1-20 vol %. Mo and/or W 10-95 wt % #1-20 vol%. Impurities may be Ti, Zr, Ta, Nb, W carbide and oxygen. The composition may be cold pressed (e.g. isostatically in sealed rubber moulds suspended in water) and sintered in vacuo; or hot pressed in graphite moulds in vacuo with maximum pressure and temperature of 500-4000 p.s.i. and 1400- 1900 C. Uses: Tools for cutting, milling, turning and boring, thread-guides, bearings, grit in resin-bonded grinding wheels and cut-off blades, and grit for electrolytic grinding wheels.
