Abstract
1,233,809. Glass fibre manufacture. W. H. W. SCHULLER. 5 Sept., 1969 [7 Sept., 1968], No. 44128/69. Heading C1M. A method of producing glass fibres comprises the steps of exuding a drop of molten glass through a nozzle and allowing it to fall under gravity drawing a filament of glass behind it, and contacting the descending drop and the adjacent portion of the filament with a curtain of liquid such as water which is being propelled transversely of the direction of descent of the drop at sufficient velocity to deflect, accelerate and sever the drop and filament portion from the remainder of the filament. The liquid curtain 8 is provided by a conduit 15 having one or more nozzles disposed at the upper end of a guide surface 9. The curtain 8 is directed so that it first contacts the surface 9 at one-third of the way along its length. The conduit 15 may be protected against contact with the filament by a cover 16, and may have additional nozzles to spray liquid on to the adjacent part of the surface 9 to clean it. In use, the drop 5 and filament portion 6 contact the liquid in area C and are deflected in the direction D so that the remainder of the filament 7 is drawn on to a drawing drum 1. Contact with the liquid shatters the drop and filament portion and the resultant fragments are deflected by a screen 13 on to a conveyer 14.
