Abstract

1,233,632. Making containers. FEDERAL PAPER BOARD CO. Inc. 27 March, 1969 [16 July, 1968], No. 16019/69. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] A container having a hexagonal base and a round conical top is erected from a precut and creased blank B of paperboard or the like, Fig. 8, in which the side walls 13, 13<SP>1</SP> are hinged at 14, 14<SP>1</SP> to the base 12 and have overlapping margins to form vertical seams and hinged tabs 17, 17<SP>1</SP>, 18, 18<SP>1</SP> to connect to the remaining straight edges of the base, the container being erected in stages, D-K, Fig. 1, on a mandrel M, the base tabs being first folded outwardly away from the base while the walls are sealed, and then folded over on to the base to complete the cup. The blank is coated with a thermally adhesive material for heat sealing. Curved scores 19 serve as a step between the hexagonal and round shapes. The blank is clamped at D by a ram (30, Fig. 2, not shown) to the mandrel, and the sides are turned down at E. At F, G and H the sides are folded round, heated by hot air or by radiation, and sealed together. The tabs and/or the base are then heated at I by reciprocating heaters (55, 55<SP>1</SP>), and are folded down on to the base at J and K. The completed cup may be secured by vacuum and lifted from the mandrel by compressed air. Once the blank is clamped in position on the mandrel, the side walls are folded round by profiled shoes (31, 32, 33, 34, Fig.4, not shown). Hot air is provided at lateral jets (52). The tabs are folded down by swinging rubber rollers (65, 66, 67, 68, Fig. 7) acting at alternate diagonals.
